The joy of e-biking

Getting out and enjoying nature on my terms

By Kevin Donovan

I’ve always appreciated the simple pleasure of being outdoors, enjoying nature, and exploring the world around me. But as my leg capacity has diminished, I’ve had to rethink how I can continue enjoying some of the activities that bring me happiness.

That’s one of the reasons my e-bike has become so special to me. My new Velotric Discovery M has opened up a world of possibilities. It has given me back something that I don’t take for granted: the freedom to get out, explore, and enjoy a bike ride without constantly worrying about what my legs can or cannot do.

Occasionally, I’ve heard comments such as, “You’re cheating.” To that I say, “I need a little bike equity with my leg capacity.”

The beauty of an e-bike is that I can still pedal and get exercise, but I have assistance when I need it. Hills that might otherwise be discouraging become manageable. Longer rides become possible. And instead of focusing on my physical limitations, I can focus on the things that really matter – the fresh air, the scenery, the sounds of nature, and the simple joy of being outside.

I love having the flexibility to choose my level of effort. Some days I can do more; other days I need a little extra help. Either way, I get to enjoy the ride.

For me, this is about so much more than having an electric bicycle. It’s about independence, maintaining an active lifestyle, and not allowing reduced physical capacity to define what I can still enjoy. There is something incredibly rewarding about following a trail, discovering a new stretch of scenery, feeling the breeze, and knowing I can go out and experience it at my own pace.

I’ve come to appreciate that we sometimes have to find new ways to enjoy the things we love. An e-bike has given me that opportunity. I’m not trying to keep up with anyone, break records, or prove anything. I’m simply enjoying the freedom to get out and experience nature on my terms. And that, to me, is one of the greatest joys of owning an e-bike.

Sometimes the best part of the journey isn’t how far you go, but simply being able to go.
