Some fun news just in from Streetcar Park on the Mahtomedi stretch of the Lake Links Trail! Friends and neighbors of the park have spent the past few years working to remove invasive plants and restore a healthy ecosystem at this historic city park. A sign of success of their efforts showed up this week in the form of Northern Waterthrush scratching around the creek bed in search of food.
Northern waterthrushes nest in Canada and Alaska and migrate through our area on their way to Mexico and South America. Apparently the word has gotten out that Streetcar Park is a great place to take a break – not only on a stroll through Old Mahtomedi or a bike ride around White Bear Lake, but also on a transcontinental flight! We wish our little visitor a pleasant trip to its winter home and hope it will stop by next spring on its way to its northern breeding grounds once again.
