Kid’s Day on May 17 at Streetcar Park was a great success; thank you to all who attended and volunteered. With many thanks to all of the donations from local supporters and grants from Mahtomedi Garden Club and the Rice Creek Watershed District, we have achieved our fundraising goal of $6,500 for the 2025 revitalization project for Streetcar Park.
In coming months, the SCP team will be holding additional planting and invasive species removal events (sign up to volunteer here), and the City of Mahtomedi will be starting their improvements to the picnic area, screening around the portable toilet, and adding a drinking fountain.
Â
The park now offers a great place for everyone to rest, gather, and play in nature. Plant identification markers are in place for many of the natural species, and additional educational materials (such as expected behaviors around plants and animals) will also be installed. The covered bridge, stream, log bridges, and natural play area are also proving to be a fun area for kids. Streetcar Park lacks a signature play element for the kids.Â
Â
Friends of Streetcar Park, and the City of Mahtomedi propose to install a 9-foot-long in-ground slide at Streetcar Park as a signature item to provide enjoyment to all who visit the park as they travel along the Lake Links Trail. This slide would be located next to the picnic area on the embankment leading west toward the stream and two crossing logs. It would have fun natural steps to go back up, plus mulch and gravel areas around it to preserve the soil. It would be away from trail traffic and also within close supervision by parents at the picnic area. Here is an example:Â

Here is a side view showing the design for Streetcar Park:

The in-ground slide would be supplied by an established manufacturer of in-ground slides with all the required Consumer Product Safety Commission components and design criteria. It would cost approximately $4,800, including peripherals of mulch, top platform, landing zone, etc. Installation of the slide and steps would be done by volunteers and city employees. Please donate now to help us get to the $4,800 to provide for the purchase of this slide and accessories that will be a signature item in the park for young people. Thank you for your consideration.
